Photos of United Arab Emirates vehicles in Yemen have emerged on Twitter. They depict at least two Leclerc AMX Main Battle Tanks, three M-ATV MRAPs, and one BMP-3 taking part in what appears to be combat operations in the country. While M-ATV MRAPs are also operated by Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates is the only regional operator of Leclerc MBTs and BMP-3s. It is currently unclear whether or not these platforms are being manned by UAE soldiers.
Following months of negotiations after the fall of Sana'a to Houthi fighters last September, militants seized the presidential compound and forced President Hadi to resign in January of this year. Saudi Arabia, heading a coalition of nine other Arab states, subsequently launched a military intervention to stop Houthi advances in late March. The Yemeni government has since requested the United Nations to deploy peacekeepers in a bid restore order and reestablish influence.
