The Islamic State first tried to seize Kobane in July, but was fended off by the YPG, with the likely help of the PKK. Since then, there has been sporadic fighting between Kurdish forces and the Islamic State in the surrounding villages.
In Raqqa, similar situations are occurring where IS is trying to eradicate Kurdish positions which threaten their control over Raqqa. While the Kurds and Syrian rebels used to fight each other, they have since joined forces to battle IS in Syria; including in Raqqa and Aleppo. The video below shows YPG forces, forces of the Free Syrian Army and forces of the Islamic Front joining forces to create a group called the Burkan al Furat (Euphrates Volcano) in Aleppo countryside.
Below are some photos disseminated by Raqqa's media wing.
The Islamic State has now released pictures from their operations in Kobane (Ayn al Arab).
