In the largest violation the Ukrainian ceasefire in place between government and rebel forces, fighting in Donetsk broke out yesterday. It appears that the offensive was aimed at seizing Donetsk airport from Ukraine. Reportedly, the assault began with an attack by Russian special forces.
Conflict News reported a similar outburst in gunfire
The assault team was supported by BM-21 rocket fire. The following was recorded by a resident in central Donetsk. According to Conflict News, there were at least three platforms stationed near a hotel in the Western part of the city.
It appears that the fire was accurate enough to inflict damage. Large plumes of smoke were reported from the airport.
Artillery fire was also reported by Reuters, but is unclear if they were referring to rocket fire or traditional shelling.
Today, Right Sector nationalists claimed to have reinforced the airport
The Ukrainian military announced earlier today that a Russian assault of infantrymen and tanks was repulsed last night by forces at the airports. If reports are true, then this is a welcome development. It further displays Ukraine's ability to combat rebel forces, even if they are backed by a well trained and supplied Russian force. Moreover, it's likely that these reports would be true. Russia still has 1,000 troops in Ukraine, which would likely be stationed in the strategically vital capital of the Donetsk People's Republic.
There appears to be some light shelling, but today has largely been quiet.
